Power outages can last hours, days, or in severe weather events, even longer. For Midlothian, VA homeowners and business owners, extended loss of power means spoiled food, failed heating and cooling systems, inability to operate medical equipment, and for businesses, lost revenue and potential damage to temperature-sensitive inventory. A properly installed generator changes this situation entirely, providing automatic or manual backup power that keeps your property running through any outage event.
Shearer Electrical Services installs standby and portable generators throughout Midlothian, VA, handling every aspect of the project from initial load assessment and equipment selection through permit applications, installation, transfer switch wiring, fuel connection coordination, and final commissioning testing. Our licensed electricians have completed generator installations for single-family homes, multi-family buildings, retail businesses, restaurants, and medical facilities throughout the region, and we bring the same thorough approach to every project regardless of its scale.
The centerpiece of any generator installation is the transfer switch, which is the device that disconnects your property from utility power and connects it to generator power when an outage occurs. Transfer switches come in two primary types: manual transfer switches that require a person to physically switch the home to generator power after the unit is running, and automatic transfer switches that detect a utility outage and connect the property to generator power within seconds without any human intervention required. Automatic transfer switches are standard with standby generators and are strongly recommended wherever unattended power transfer is desired.
Standby generators for Midlothian, VA homes are fueled by natural gas or propane and are permanently installed outside the building on a concrete pad. They connect to the existing gas service, are wired to the home's electrical system through the transfer switch, and include automatic testing systems that run the generator briefly each week to confirm readiness. Home standby generators range from units that power critical circuits only to large-capacity units capable of running the entire home including central air conditioning, electric water heaters, and all other high-draw appliances simultaneously.
